The American frontier was often referred to as the "wild west" because of its lawlessness and harsh environmental conditions. With limited access to medical care and less than ideal living conditions, the average lifespan was 35 years. Often romanticized, it took a lot of hard work to tame the land which largely consisted of isolated ranches and towns. There was much conflict between Native Americans and those settlers wanting a fresh start. Even though the American Southwest has some very harsh conditions, there are beautiful views unlike anywhere else in the world.
