Heeding a call for missionary settlers, fifteen brave emigrants left the Franconia region of Bavaria to join Frederick Wyneken in Michigan and set up a Lutheran mission in 1845. That Bavarian heritage still thrives in Frankenmuth today. Over three million people visit annually. It is home to famous, traditional chicken dinners at Zehnder’s restaurant, one of two of the largest restaurants in America – both in Frankenmuth. Frankenmuth means “courage of the Franconians.” We asked you to tell us who exemplifies courage to you, and many of your nominees are in this painting. Unfortunately, we couldn’t feature them all.
