In the seventh century, A.D., Vikings docked at a black pool on the mouth of the Liffey River and named the settlement Dublin, for the dark water. The Viking origins of the city are celebrated even today. Over a thousand years later, the city is the capital of Ireland. Even though it is one of the smallest counties in the country, it is the most populated. In addition to being the capital, Dublin is a world center of literature, music, and the resting place of St. Valentine.
