The White House Easter Egg Roll is a White House tradition, originally started in 1814 by Dolley Madison, wife of President James Madison, but it wasn't moved to the White House lawns until President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878. Since then, it has been hosted by subsequent Presidents and first Lady of the United States on the White House South Lawn each Easter Monday for children (usually 13 and younger). The race is performed by children pushing an egg through the grass with a long-handled spoon. Other events include exhibits of beautifully decorated eggs and the Easter Bunny appearing!
