With the majestic Mount Timpanogos as a backdrop, Utah Valley University is the largest public university in the State of Utah with its main campus in Orem and satellite campuses in Heber City, Spanish Fork, North Orem, Lehi, and Provo. Previously, called Utah Valley State College, the school achieved university status in July of 2008 with Matthew S. Holland appointed as the first president.
On campus are numerous buildings devoted to the study of many disciplines in science, business, education, performing arts, athletics, and media, and includes a new digital learning center which contains networked computers, computer labs, a computer reference area, media center, 31 study rooms, and wireless internet throughout the building.
Notable achievements of the university include the creation of the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy which provides free realistic fire training to students and Utah fire agencies and includes a 53-foot-long Mobile Command Center, acquired by federal grants. And if you go to an athletics event, you’ll be sure to see Willy the Wolverine, the school mascot and the UVU student section, the Mighty Athletic Wolverine League or “MAWL,” a name created by former executive vice president of student government Justin Davies. Students can become ‘True Wolverines’ by kissing someone at the yearly True Wolverine event at in the courtyard at midnight.
