Stowe was chartered in 1763, but the first settlers did not arrive until 31 years later, in 1794. Stowe Is Vermont's largest city in land area and includes beautiful Mount Mansfield and the surrounding mountains. The area's commerce was first based on forestry but then progressed to dairy production. In the mid-1800s, the economic base shifted to tourism in this scenic summer resort area. In the early 1900s, the development of the ski industry brought year-round tourism to Stowe. Stowe is still a major tourist attraction for artists, photographers and craftspeople, in addition to outdoor sports enthusiasts. Known for its apple cider in the fall, the area receives more than 750,000 visitors annually. The scenic image of the Stowe Community Church is a popular folk art subject.
