Once known as Quashquema, named in honor of the Native American chief who headed the Sauk and Fox tribes, this humble areas would soon stand as a historical city for western movement. In 1827 settlers began to build on top of the swamplands so efficiently that after two years, a post office was created in Venus, the new town's named. Five years later in 1834, settlers felt that a new name was better for their plans, calling it Commerce. Then in 1839, refugee Latter-day Saints began turning the small town into a developed city, renaming it Nauvoo in 1840, which means "beautiful place" in Hebrew. After tremendous persecution, the Saints left their beautiful city and temple behind, leaving a special spirit behind. Today you can walk the peaceful streets of Nauvoo with tour guides and missionaries and uncover the history of the 18th century Latter-day Saints un Nauvoo, Illinois.
